Hey Vico, I totally understand where you're coming from, but just wanted to give another perspective. For those that aren't working on freelance projects that take months, this seems pretty doable.
Freelancing is really more like picking up other jobs, whereas creating products scales much better, which is what it seems like the author is pointing out. For example, I offer UX Mentoring and different tiers. It's totally possible for me to make paid guides, grab a few high paying clients at my top price (full interview prep), run a design sprint in a group where I charge people for attendance, and then even possibly create a course for getting into UX without going back to school.
That's all possible, but I wouldn't be able to scale if I was just freelancing UX on the side. The key to this article is that some of these options are stackable (group work) and passive (great it once, sell it forever).
