I totally agree that we should be more open about discussing finances (I've taken screenshot of my total comp and shared the details in articles here that thousands have read).

However, I disagree that we should have to completely walk around the subject of why we are at our job in the first place and convince our employers that money is a secondary concern for us. Generally, it's the other way around unless you're strapped with so much cash that you don't need to worry about the money.

Why people have jobs:

1.) To make money to live their lives

2.) Because they enjoy what they do (if they are in the lucky minority that actually like it).

Ideally, you'd have both. But I've seen tons and tons of coworkers stay at a place they don't care for because it pays them well. I've also seen people leave jobs they love because another company is offering to double their salary.

I think that both pieces are important for a fulfilling career of course, but I think we need to change the narrative that we should have to convince our employers that money isn't a driving factor. They pay us to be there and to do a job, and so we hold the power in that situation in terms of what amount we are willing to accept. We need to stop giving up that power because we "love our jobs".
